How to Choose Laminate Flooring
0
Laminate is considered by flooring industry professionals to be one of the toughest types of surfaces on the market. Like other types of floor covering, many different grades and styles are available. Less expensive than hardwood flooring, laminate is lighter and easier to install and maintain. Most manufacturers suggest you should not base laminate flooring selection on thickness, but on a combination of factors that comprise quality.
AC Ratings
AC rating levels indicate the durability of laminate flooring. This system, developed by the European Producers of Laminate Flooring, is a worldwide standard that measures factors such as resistance to moisture, standing liquids, cigarette and other types of burns, stains, abrasion and impact. Ratings start at AC1 and range up to AC5. AC1 is for moderate use such as bedrooms and closets. AC2 floors are suitable for medium usage spaces such as living rooms and dining rooms, while AC3 is for heavy residential and moderate commercial use. General commercial AC4 floors may be used in all residential areas and commercial spaces with heavier traffic. AC5 typically only is installed in heavy commercial situations. Industry experts recommend purchasing floors with an AC3 or higher rating.
Other Important Qualities
In addition to AC rating, several other factors make up quality laminate flooring. These include a strong backing and dense core layer; boards with dense, treated edges that snap snugly together and stay locked; a well-printed hardwood reproduction; and ultraviolet treatment to prevent surface fading.
